Araveena's Muriel Morgentau

Long time no see..! I'm back in Germany for a few weeks to catch up with friends and family, which is why I rarely find some time for being online or creative. I kinda need a short break as well but at last I managed to finish another commission. I was asked to paint Araveena's OC Muriel Morgentau and it was a pleasure to do so, for she is a very lovely fairy.
I do not own the character, she belongs to Araveena.

Some w.i.p. photographs I took as I went along.

After finishing the pencil lines I applied a coffee wash and worked light washes of colour into it - wet on wet.
I used a clean tissue to dip the colour off certain areas like the skin. You can clearly see the lovely texture the coffee remainder create in combination with salt.

After applying all the washes I had to let them dry. You shouldn't use a hair dryer to speed things up for it will just ruin the textures and patterns. I then was able to apply reddish brown lines and hightlights using a very thin fineliner and white gelpen.
At last I mixed a dark hue with lots of pigment and only little water and applied it overall to create shadow and depth. That's it!

Finally I was able to send it to it's owner alongside the art trade parts. I hope they'll all arrive safely and please their clients.

Collecting Memories

I don't know why but I found it extremely difficult to pick the right colours for this one...
Her dress had at least four different shades, luckily I painted mainly with acrylic paints so I could go over and over it again. I'm still not satisfied with the colour sheme, it's far from what I intended it to be.
The perspective is quite alright I guess.
I really hope my lovely art trade partner will like it and will recognize her character as well.
I don't think I'm very good at capturing the likeness of another artist's OC. :/

Ink & Tint

I Finally continued my latest painting and pretty much finished inking and underpainting in one go.
Inking used to be the part I disliked most but I enjoy it more and more these days..especially if there are a lot of details. Also I formed the habit of creating sepia/orange underpaintings which really help to create an atmosphere and harmonic colour scheme, since you don't need to think about different colours and how they'd go together at all but can completely focus on light and shadow first.
Now I'm gonna start applying colours on top.

By the way, I'm currently taking part in a competition with my 'Sacred Hoop'. If you liked the book you can vote for it here: [Link]
I'd really appreciate your support. Thank you in advance.:)

I watch over you - complete

I watch you, fair lady
collecting fullmoon flowers at midnight
I sense you, oh dear lady
shining brighter than them in the moonlight

Shrouded by the shadows of the trees night by night,
I watch over you, dreaming to step with you in the light

Finished painting and some more w.i.p. I actually rather like it. :)

I watch over you - lines

I started a new painting today. It's so good to work on something fresh after the long bookproject (which still isn't finished but I'm getting there...).
It's for an art trade again - a secret santa kind of thing. All participants had to state their zodiac sign and a personal quality, then each of us got a person's name by mail and now we have to paint something related to the information they had given.
I got 'Sagittarius' and 'shy' - not the most fittig combination I guess.
But it's a good illustrative challenge and I'm going to do it traditionally with water colours.

I stretched the paper for the very first time. I know I should have done this for many previous works but I simply was too lazy I guess.. Anyway, it took me some attempts, because this really is one of the things you have to do completely perfect or it's no use at all. I got there at last and now have a pretty neat surface to work onto. c: Firstly I layed down a soft ochre wash and created some textures with salt; this really gives consistency to a painting.

I then transferred the sketch I drew earlier onto the textured wash - just the most important lines and with very little pressure.

The last ast and most time consuming step was the inking which I haven't done for quite a while since I mostly work directly into pencil lines lately... But I'm aiming for a Golden Age illustration feel with this, so lines are all important and I actually found great delight in the process. It's really calming.
Now it's all about laying down the coloured washes and I'm really looking forward to that part.

Oh, and tomorrow I'm going to pick up my book from the printing shop... I so hope everything went well this time...
